the early life of a comedic genius*

I don’t exactly think I’m a funny person, but people often laugh at things I say. I can never tell if people are laughing because it’s funny, though, or if they pity me. Such is the life of a person with a strange sense of self-esteem. There’s no consistency in it. Some days, I feel pretty full of myself; other days, I’m utterly paranoid, convinced that nobody likes me everybody hates me something something worms. Anyway, this post isn’t about me, it’s about me.

So the other night, I came home from work and promptly fell asleep on the couch for about 90 minutes. As one does. By the time I woke up, it was nearly 7:30pm, and neither mom nor I had eaten dinner, nor did we have any ideas about what to eat other than we knew we needed to eat. So we began looking through the cupboards and the pantry to see what we could make, which turned up bupkis unless we wanted to eat boxed macaroni cheese, which no. So we did the natural thing: we sat on the couch for another half-hour and did nothing about putting food in our faces until mom turned to me and said, “wanna go to McDonald’s and get some chickie nuggets?” and I was, surprisingly, all like “DEAR GOD YES.” so we went to McDonald’s. must/mustn’t watch cinema

So as you might have surmised, I am a great lover of film. I’ve hardly met a movie where I didn’t find at least something enjoyable or redeeming about it. Even the really terrible films might have a so-bad-it’s-good kind of quality, or there might have been one standout performance, or maybe one set piece that was very well done in all the awfulness. But then there are films that have a subject matter that, even though I found myself really connecting with the movie, I have an incredibly hard time recommending them to other people. These are films that are obviously going to be hard for other people to watch, usually because of the violence. Continue reading must/mustn’t watch cinema

anecdote time!!!

So I probably shouldn’t discuss this, but I cannot help myself. IT MAKES ME FULL OF GLEE.

The other day at work, my supervisor relayed a conversation with one of our co-workers. It went something like this: co-worker and her spouse had dinner with friends. These friends have a young daughter, 19, who announced her recent engagement at this gathering. Her response to this was “we are praying that they (the daughter and her fiance) break up.” Continue reading anecdote time!!!

full disclosure: contains justin bieber

I watch a lot of movies. Last year, I logged close to 300 views; this year the number dropped to about 250. That kind of depressed me, because I wanted to at least match last year’s number. As I did last year, I’ll post a list of everything I viewed, with first time views marked accordingly. I have noticed a disturbing trend, however: the more films I watch, the less books I read, and that is something I’m not particularly proud of. So with the help of some twitter pals, I’m logging my reading over at Goodreads. HORRAY. Continue reading full disclosure: contains justin bieber

long time, no talk

Oh hi. I have been away from this blog for a very long time, due to several reasons, including blogging for the October Horror Challenge and also working on an essay for a project that’s under wraps for right now (although I can’t stop talking about it – bad anna bad!). But it’s almost the end of the year now, so I should maybe do one of those end-of-year wrap ups. Okay. Sure. Continue reading long time, no talk
